Ok Nice with Edy Modica
NYC comedian and good person, Edy Modica, answers 5 questions and provides a playlist.
You may have seen one of her appearances on Office Hours with Tim Heidecker or maybe you watched her brilliant short film Nicole, which follows Nicole, an irredeemable yet lovable maniac played by Edy, who’s on a desperate journey to Dunkin’ for a coolatta, or maybe you’re a true head and saw Gold People. Either way, fans of the good and strange comedy space can’t avoid Edy, which is for the best.
I met Edy when we were both interns at The Heart, She Holler, a short-lived show on Adult Swim. It was kind of a brutal gig with extremely long hours and, wait for it, no pay. But it was an introduction to Edy, which I believe would’ve been inevitable regardless—as I consider myself a fan of stuff that’s funny and good—but getting in on the ground floor was a #blessing.
The people who do it best are always the ones who don’t just get in where they fit in, but make room. Edy is doing just that and it’s been a joy to watch comedy heavy hitters like Heidecker take note of the rare talent that is Edy. Now it’s your turn.
What’s your day-to-day look like?
alright, i am a routineless slob. i try to wake up by 9 every morning, i drink 3 cups of coffee and look at los angeles apparel ads on my phone until i feel pissed enough to get in touch with myself by smoking weed. i don't love this set up, but i haven't reached a point where it is bad enough that i take the leap and change my whole life, you know? weed really brings my truth to the surface, how am i feeling....what the fuck am i going to do today....why am i acting like a bitch to people i love, oh it's because i am experiencing insecurity emotion!!! once i've gotten to the bottom of all of that, i feel ready to be creative. i come up with my best stuff when i open a google doc, put a wig on, smoke weed and talk in front of the mirror for a few hours. i need deadlines also, so i like making those for myself. i'll book a venue for a show and post the poster before i've even come up with what the show is. the pressure really helps me squeeze it out.
Best advice you’ve been given?
why is this one so hard for me??? trust your gut? honesty is the best policy? don't stop believing? when you enter a restaurant just to use their bathroom, walk in like you own the place?
Favorite thing you own?
my latex g-cup fake titties!!!!
i love performing as different kinds of people from my life and my favorite part of the process is getting the look exactly right. to me, a girl who would scale a building to spy on her boyfriend smoking a cig with another girl outside a modell’s....has big fake titties.
i think committing to a big purchase for your art also just feels like damn i am actually out here doing what i want to do!!!! .......and that is cool!!!!! feels like anything is possible (for the price of $100 on ebay)
………….🚨POSSIBLY NSFW IMAGE OF THE FAKE BOOBIES BELOW🚨………….
What’s your go to beverage?
a yaya boba milk tea with half sweetness. if you're asking why, it's because you haven't had one yourself....
Favorite piece of art?
LIVEBLOG BY MEGAN BOYLE!!!!!!!! Wow....it is my favorite thing to read!!! so in 2013, writer, filmmaker, all around cool renaissance woman of the indie world, Megan Boyle, live blogged every detail of her life on the internet for 6 months. the book is 550 pages of just that. it's like reading the inside of someone's brain and that someone is unrelentingly honest, messy, beautiful, and so funny!! her voice is pure and nasty and specific and it's a joy to read whatever the fuck she's thinking about on any given page. get a copy so we can talk about it :)
